KNOCKOUT!

A one-man show with subsequent conversation. About the male norm, privileges, marginalisation and how we achieve a society without sexual violence.

Errence goes through his masculinity journey. It is a constant struggle between what those around him expect him to become, and what he himself wants to become. Nor is it certain that Terrence himself knows. He often lies for his own gain, but it is not only untruths that he spreads – he also likes to exaggerate his own and other people’s stories to improve his image. The bitter irony is that it is unclear whether he himself gains anything from these male privileges.

The purpose of this solo performance is to work on prevention and violence prevention, against abuse and sexual violence, for a sign language target group. And that through conversation the participants should gain increased self-esteem and self-awareness about their own responsibility and their own part in the work to reach a society without abuse and sexual violence.

Knockout is an arena for conversations with the audience and reflections on norms connected to gender and sexuality, as well as language and function, and how they affect life and everyday life in practice. This production examines the issue of being both privileged in terms of gender, but at the same time feeling subordinated or marginalised due to one’s disability.

The performance is part of the project Äkta Man, which is financed by the Heritage Foundation and run by RFSU Stockholm in collaboration with Sweden’s Deaf Youth Association, the Swedish Deaf Sports Association and Riksteatern Crea.

POWER

With poetry, song and battles, the twins Jamila and Amina will break norms and taboos. A housewife and a woman who make a career should be considered equally strong and important – but who does the right thing according to society? Maybe both? Perhaps no one. On stage, they represent yin and yang – two primordial forces that both balance and fight against each other. Two souls in one body, and two bodies with one mind.

Through Visual Vernacular, a visual storytelling that uses gestures and facial expressions, the performance becomes accessible to everyone. Power leaves the audience — deaf as well as hearing — with many thoughts and reflections.

Jamila and Amina Ouahid are world famous in the deaf community for their special and strong expressions. The script is written by Maja Lidbrink who previously wrote ”Home”, a play about deaf refugees during the refugee crisis in 2015. ”Home” toured with the Riksteatern in 2019 and Amina was one of the actors in that set. Directed by Power, Mindy Drapsa, artistic director at Riksteatern Crea, who also directed ”Home”.

Played in international sign with newly written music and visual scenographic solutions that enhance the narrative so that even non-signers can understand and enjoy the performance.
